Imogen Heap's clearly a communicator, personally and musically. And like all true communicators, she knows it's a two-way street. However, I'll be interested to see what effect this gradually has on her art. Perhaps the idiosyncrasies that made her such a fresh artist in the first place will become ironed-out into some megapopular juggernaut of blandness. As any politician will know, appealing to the maximum number of people possible can become like a drug: a motive in itself and apt to challenge personal integrity. Maybe this is a good thing. Is one's role as a individual best served by being a) a popular individual #1: a general representative of commonplace ideas b) a popular individual #2: an entertaining freakshow or c) as someone introducing new ideas - in spite of prevailing habits - that only reveal their pertinence gradually to others?
Of course, perhaps exceptional individuals are capable of all three.
'Exceptional' being the operative term.

this line alone shows that Leftsetz does not 'get it." ... "1.Is it worth it? How does the time Heap invests in engaging with her fans result in real revenue?"

why does everything have to be about making money? there is much more to art and to life than the dollar bill!

I read both your original profile on Heap, and then Lefsetz letter on it. He seemed almost scared in his writing and opinion on it.

I knew he was quite wrong in much of what he said, but I guess we had to wait to see how she went to validate that.

I'd say #4 and #6 is pretty damn worth it. Not to mention how her concerts will most likely sellout.

She may be a slightly exceptional case due to the amount of work she has put in, but then again isn't being a musician a job...
